Windsurfing Magazine – April Issue – 2000 Sail Tests

    Sailworks Revolution Style 5.0

Low-End Power-Oriented Sailor: The Revolution Style has tremendous low-end punch with great handling. The draft can be locked down low in the sail or with minimal downhaul, shape can be carried higher along the mast. Per condition, the Revo has a light, powerful and maneuver-oriented feel.
High-Wind Control-Oriented Sailor: Although it’s powerful in light-air, properly adjusted, the Revolution is stable, fast and controllable in the upper ranges. With the downhaul set, it’s dependent on outhaul for shape and perimeter tension. It has a large wind range with various settings.
Onshore Sailor: Setting a slightly tighter leech will increase windward performance and add punch for getting through the break, even in marginal or strong current conditions. It remains maneuverable, slippery and controllable on a wave and through transitions.
Down-the-Line Sailor: The Revolution has a dacron luff for draft control, is built durably with grid panels throughout and has added reinforcement in high-stress areas. It’s powerful but controllable with the ability to quickly de-power through bottom turns. It’s built to last and can handle the rigors of wave sailing.
Comment: The Sailworks Revolution Style is a range and performance-oriented sail. It’s versatile through wave, bump and jump, freestyle, and flat-water high-wind sailing. The smaller sizes are designed for control, stability and maneuverability while the larger sizes emphasize power and control to get you going in marginal and less than perfect conditions.

    2000 Sail Tests

    Sailworks Retro 7.5

Easy-Rigging-Oriented Sailor: This is one of the easiest sails to rig in the test. It has visual aids for proper downhaul, and has a double shive three-pulley block at the tack for easy tensioning. The pulley wheels roll for minimal friction (you can almost hold the base in one hand and downhaul with the other). It requires positive outhaul tension and comes with one adjustable outhaul webbing strap.
Low-End Power-Oriented Sailor: At minimal and medium settings, the Retro can pull like a truck. It has incredible low-end. The draft is deep in the foot and carries toward the tip of the sail. Once your downhaul is set, the outhaul tension determines how much power you’ll feel.
High-End Control-Oriented Sailor: Rigged at maximum settings, the Retro can have a shallow draft and loose leech for control, stability and minimum drag. This is a range-oriented sail that needs to be fine-tuned per condition. We recommend using an adjustable outhaul to eliminate re-rigging and allow you to fine-tune under way. You won’t even have to stop.
Speed-Oriented Sailor: The Retro is a fast sail that excels at beam and broad reaching. It suffers only slightly upwind compared to some cambered sails that have a more rigid leading edge. It has three leech stabilizers to minimize flutter and the head opens efficiently for smooth acceleration.
Comment: The Retro is designed as a range-oriented sail. It’s easy to rig, fast and controllable. The larger sizes are slalom and race-oriented (with great low-end) and the smaller sizes are more slalom and bump and jump-oriented. Sailworks includes an adjustable outhaul system with each size Retro, it makes fine-tuning while you’re sailing easy and efficient.

    Sailworks XT-Racing 8.5

Easy-Rigging-Oriented Sailor: The XT-Racing has a lightweight performance-oriented mast sleeve, so slide the mast in carefully while picking up the cambers. The battens stay on the mast while you finish rigging and the three-pulley block system at the tack really makes downhauling easy. We still recommend using a tool for fine-tuning, but you can easily get away without it. The battens tension with a supplied key and the sail includes a built in base pad.
Low-End Power-Oriented Sailor: This has a deep drafted profile with shape carried through the upper region of the sail. It’s very powerful down low and has positive camber rotation creating forward and balanced pull. The leech and head open effectively for smooth acceleration and a slippery yet powerful feel.
High-End Control-Oriented Sailor: The XT-Racing is extremely stable in the upper ranges. The leading edge holds its rigidity, the leech and head twist and open consistently. At the maximum setting the head and upper section of the sail is flat helping to lock the draft low in the foot and boom area. You can adjust the cambers to be higher or lower tension depending on personal preference. Less experienced sailors usually like lower tension for easier rotation.
Comment: The XT-Racing is a sail with great range and excels upwind, deep off the breeze and through the holes. The leech is loose but not to floppy, which maintains power yet keeps a lightweight feel. The boom cut out needs to pushed in behind the mast and prevents excessive water from flowing into the sleeve on the occasional quick dunk. It’s a sail any level sailor can enjoy from pleasure cruising to professional racing.
