  Disclaimer: what you are about to read is an OPINION, not a review. I don’t claim to be an expert rider, nor an authority on kites, BUT…

  The new Naish Torch is undoubtably the best kite I have ever ridden!!!

  I have ridden every Naish model ever made, from AR5 to X4. Recently, as my interest has moved strongly toward wave-riding and away from anything ”flat water related”, I decided to look for a gentler, more forgiving kite. After wild reports about the Torch, I decided to buy a quivver, 8, 10 and 12.

  I have criticized kite ”reviews” before as I don’t believe one can judge a kite in 1 or 2 sessions, so I decided to withhold judgement until I had sampled a number of different scenarios.

  The 8 was incredible. It IMMEDIATELY inspired a huge amount of confidence. Until recently I was pretty scared to do anything daring in over 11 m/s (average). With the Torch I was CONFIDENTLY doing loops and was able to wave-ride with the kite passing directly through the window and not losing my edge. The wind range was phenominal and I am confident that it will handle well in excess of a 13 m/s (average) wind.

  Yesterday I rode the 12. Initially I was riding it in 6 m/s. I have NEVER been able to stay upwind in 6 m/s before – even with a 16!!! Although I was not able to jump very high, I was able to stay upwind and have a LOT of fun. During the course of the day the wind picked up until is was averaging 11 m/s, gusting to 15 m/s. I was still VERY comfortable on the 12 and had not depowered it at all!! The jumps were every bit as high as an X4!!!

  I have not ridden the 10, but Mike Randall borrowed a demo 10 from Cape Sports and has refused to give it back!!!

  In short:
  (1) PHENOMINAL wind range
  (2) Gentle, yet very responsive turning
  (3) Gives the feeling of being ”balanced” – gave a lot more confidence during disorienting tricks!
  (4) VERY controlled – the kite never misbehaves during gusts

  On top of it all consider the extras: the fifth line means you will never lose your kite and relaunching is possible within SECONDS!!! You don’t have to kick off your board, or swim toward the kite. The one-pump system doesn’t have any pipes and external valves etc. It is completely integrated into the kite and has built-in one way valves so that a leak in one bladder doesn’t affect the others.
