Maui Windsurfing: Sliding Into Spring
Kind of a smorgasbord of sailing conditions this week as we approach spring. Starting in reverse chronological order, timing was everything today. Mostly a light day but there were periods where the wind came up to moderate levels. I timed the 2:00 5.3 session fairly well. A bit underpowered and it was a bit of work to make it to Uppers, but the payoff was some really nice logo-high waves. Some of the sets were a bit elusive at times, but some good rides to be had. Only lasted about 45 minutes then the wind dropped and I slogged in.
Before my session I thought I’d see if I could snap a few pics of Uppers. Caught a few of a Nick Warmuth aerial. Kind of fuzzy, but you have to consider the action is pretty far away.
Yesterday was a little slice of summer. Well powered on the 5.0 – at times overpowered but a few holes out there so didn’t want anything smaller. Gorgeous, sunny, blue skies day. Warmer than it’s been lately. Surf was mostly wind swell, but an occasional more down-the-line set once in awhile. Fun day and smiles all around at Kanaha. Heard Hookipa was just silly crowded and not that epic for how over-eager everyone was.
Wednesday and Thursday we saw silly windy conditions and pretty rainy at times too. Wednesday was absolutely nuclear with one stretch averaging just below 40 mph and gusting around 45 mph.
Caught a short, squally session on Tuesday with big wind swell. Gray day and kind of cool by Maui standards. Monday – just a rainy mess of a day, windy, but wet, gray, onshore and cool.
