Maui Windsurfing: Strong Trades & XL Surf
Strong trade winds and extra large surf are back on Maui’s north shore today. The trade winds made a return earlier than I anticipated and by afternoon average wind speeds at Kanaha were in the mid 20s. And, continuing the epic north shore wave season, yet another very large north swell rolled into the north shore with mast to mast and half conditions up and down the coast. Hookipa was mostly closed out. “Daunting” was the term used by KP to describe the conditions at Hookipa so lots of folks down the coast at Kanaha again.
Pretty big and fun at both Lowers and Uppers. Easily mast high at Lowers with some occasional mast and half and easily mast and half at Uppers. Pretty heavy conditions. The swell should start subsiding quickly though with the surf forecast calling for the waves to drop down to a more reasonable 12 – 16 feet tomorrow. Trade winds should stick around too, so we should get several nice days of wave sailing conditions this week. Good news for all the team riders arriving for the 2011 photo shoots.
