Speedsurfingblog: Tiny board and big sail
Last time on ”the curve” I used the starboard isonic speed special W49 (64liters) + the severne reflex 7.0. For fins I chose to test 3 different 28cm, in the end the Sonntag SL-S was best. I hoped for at least 5 strong solid 20kn gusts and aimed for 38kn/ 70km/h runs, we got some short 18kn gusts and maybe a rare 20kn gust…
It is not comftable sailing with such a big sail, but not impossible either. The basic feeling is the trim gets more important, when something is wrong it gets very heavy sailing. Compared to other speedsurfers I had slower upwind speed. It was really hard since The Curve is a wide channel, so best is to go maximum upwind, still such a small board needs some downwind to get gliding which costs a lot upwind reach distance.
Downwind the trick was to let the board ride a bit deeper in the water, this might sound strange… But really high on the water was to much for such a small fin. If I got over 33/34kn I pushed the board on the water, however this happened only once.
Conclusion was till 20kn I better take the iSonic 86 on W53, this suits the conditions better. I think it would have been 2kn or more faster on all points. The W49 board had a high angle of attack 99% of the time, still the results are good.
