My latest foot injury, and some cyborg engineering
Everybody can hurt themselfs. Some do it due to their passive lifestyles. Sitting in the office, sitting in the car, sitting in front of the TV or in front of the computer. Others do it in the traffic, or due to their bad eating, smoking or drinking habits. Yet others do it because they move a little bit too radically. I belong to the later category. Just over a month ago I had a very skilled foot specialist doing some surgery on the main joint inside the big toe on my left foot. Wear and tear combined with a little surf related accident this spring were the causes for the surgery. Anyhow, my physical therapist told me that windsurfing was out of question for 6 month and surfing more or less the same. When I told him about this Maui trip he just shock his head. So… I cut some S-glas, some pieces of carbon and mixed with some very high-quality epoxy (materials I usually use in my surfboard building).

So, after some laminating, cutting and sanding, I had a very custom built protection. Yesterday I tried it out windsurfing. I used it with a thin reef surf boot on the outside. I just went out sailing in flat water, made a jib or two and went in to tune the protection. It was a little bit to wide, needed to be taped a little bit differently. After three trials it started to feel ok. Usually I hate waring boots when windsurfing, and this was a boot with a carbon protection on the inside; of course it wasn’t the perfect feel. But now I think I can windsurf in more or less any condition without risking to stop or ware down the growth of new cartilage in my joint. Today I went surfing with it and it worked perfect!!
My foot yesterday. Protection still not perfect, a bit wide and too little duck tape:

But at least it gives me some hope of me being able to do so at all. So far the protection is a major success!
