My two loves
Yes, I do have a family and yes it comes first, but…
I do also have love enough for some of my favorite tools. One of them is my 4.5 wave sail; my magic Firelight is just that – fire and light. ”Fire” in terms of power, drama and explosion, ”light” in terms of no-weight but also as in truth (se Plato’s cave metaphor).
But neither my family or my magic sail is the topic for this note. It is my two wave-sailing windsurf boards here on Maui. Both are shaped by Quatro head shaper Keith Tabul, both are 80liter in volume, both are quads (four fins), both are shaped for Maui conditions, both are lovely boards that fit me perfect. Still they are very different beasts.
The read one has a narrow tail and narrow nose = curvy outline. The white one has, relative the red, parallel outline with wider nose and tail. The red one has deep single to double concaves, combined with a inverted vee. The concaves are exaggerated along the rails. The white one has very subtle single concave in front, to more accentuated but more classic double in back, no vee. The red has quite round tucked under rails. The white has slightly sharper rails. The red has more spread out fin position. The white has back and front fins more close together.
OK, all these details can be sorted out to being features that create speed, hold, grip, looseness, pop, back foot turniness, full rail carving. etc. When I try to understand all this, the very different combinations of shape features seems to be able to result in boards that fill more or less the same purposes. But, they still have very very different basic feels. The red has soooooo much control going fast down the line on big fast waves. It also has a very snappy pivoting cutback. The white has a more speedy feel, but it still has very good control. It is somewhat faster, less stuck in the water, but it also has a more distinct rail-feeling in the turn. It is not at all stiff, but it pivots a little less easy when putting pressure on the back foot.
I love both, and that is hard, since I think one might be jealous when I interact with the other. I’ actually thinking of selling one of them, but how could you sell something you love and have had so much fun with? It has to be too a very loving and good person, who will treat my then ex with love and care, but also that will interact with it full on, and let the wild side of the board come alive to its full potential…
Maybe I should keep them both?
