WINDSURFING CELEBRATES TWO DECADES OF THE ALOHA CLASSIC WAVE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Maui, Hawaii (USA) — Time flies, the summer is here and soon it will be fall with one of the longest-running wave sailing events in the world returning to Maui for it’s 20th birthday, the ”Aloha Classic”, the crown jewel of windsurfing events, slated for November 7th-13th at Ho’okipa Beach Park, Maui, Hawaii. Since it’s creation in 1984, the Aloha Classic had been the traditional final event of the Pro World tour for many years. The top ranking international competitors are invited to the 20th Aloha Classic along with top Hawaii athletes to compete side by side. November is historically known to have the best wind and wave conditions, with trade winds blowing side shore at 15-20 knots and waves that can reach up to 10 -15 feet, the consistent trade winds and seasonally large surf make the Aloha Classic the most popular destination of the windsurfing media, spectators and athletes. Many luminaries of the sport have competed in the Aloha Classic from Robbie Naish, to Pete Cabrina, to Bjorn Dunkerbeck, to Rush Randle, to Jason Polakow for the men and Kelby Anno, Dana Dawes, Jennifer Henderson, Anne-Marie Reichmann and Angela Cochran for the women to name a few. Event Director, Marc Lefebvre, of the Maui Windsurfing Association, has secured a three year agreement with Ehman Production for the rights of this prestigious event. Paul Ehman, the original creator of the Aloha Classic, is glad to support the continuation of the competition with his TV production company.

”This event is an important part of windsurfing history. It has been the world stage for the best in windsurfing as well as promoting Maui as a premier windsurfing destination. Last year’s return of the Classic saw great action on the water, and showed the passion everyone here has for this traditional event. We want to keep the momentum flowing on Maui; it will be good for the sailors, good for Maui and for the windsurfing industry as a whole.” says Lefebvre. Marc Lefebvre has been an event organizer since 1995 and has been involved in organizing the ’Maui Speed Challenge Series’, ’Molokai Crossing’, ’WD-40 Downwind Classic’, ’Cape Cod Formula Series’, ’Wind Fest Cape Cod’, and the ’King of the Cape Freestyle Pro-Am’, an International Freestyle event on Cape Cod, before moving to Maui in 2002. In 2004 he helped revive the Aloha Classic with focus on Amateur wave sailing. For the first time the event introduced a kids and junior division, which proved to be a huge success. The grand masters division is already much anticipated for this year’s event with a legends of windsurfing history slated to compete against rivals old and new.
