GoPro ego-cam
I totally forgot to write a note about it, but 2 or 3 years ago I bought a GoPro action camera. I tried it once windsurfing but I just thought it interfered with the experience. It became one more thing to think of, disturbing me to get into that flow-feeling when you do not think at all, when you just becomes a part of nature and physical moment, time stops… well if you been there you know what I’m talking about. My attempt at filming this with a GoPro did not make me wanna try it out more.
The camera was put on a shelf and has been there since then. Berfore this last trip to Maui I sold it.
But then I read about the new GoPro, it had a remote control with one big on-off button. I thought, maybe I can get used to that, a simple on-off on my wrist? Maybe it will not disturbe as much. Said and done: I finally bought one in one of the surf shops on Maui.
I Emailed two friends who are 200% into photographing and filming water sports. Both Gurra and Henrik (at http://www.Kulingvaring.nu) gave me some very valuable advise on how to set the camera. I’m NOT very interested in all that techy aspects of it. I just need one simple setting that works in most situations. Gurra recommended me to set it on 1080/30 (I think?). So I did and mounted it on the nose of my 7’2.
I did not want to be around a lot of other surfers when trying this new gadget first time. Thus I went for my morning surf to a spot rarely surfed. The waves weren’t that good, but at least I was alone. Then I also brought the Gopro to the same day’s sunset session. This was on a much better wave called Mama’s. Usually there is a little local crew of short board surfers there. Of some reason I was alone there two (well there was a reason, the peaks were shifting and somewhat more mushy than usual due to a very easterly swell, but still a very good wave).
Whatever. I think the picture quality is almost insane. My surfing is what it is, everything but insane… One fun thin is that the morning surf was in knee to waist-high waves, while the sunset surf was head-high. On the GoPro video – you cannot tell the difference!
I transfered the recorded material into my Mac, edited super fast in IMovie, put on first best tune I found on Itunes with same length as the edited film. It all tock about an hour – easy!
Ego, ego, here we go… everything but pro:
