Dom Mee’s attempt to cross the Atlantic in a kite boat appears to be over.
Adrift in stormy seas off Newfoundland’s Grand Banks, the British sailor
sent out a distress signal on Sunday.Mee, 34, left St. John’s, N.L. in August aboard a kite-powered, four-metre
Little Murka with 60 days of supplies. He was hoping to cross the Atlantic
to Exmouth, England. The effects of recent hurricanes have kept the sailor close to Canadian
waters.”Winds in the area are blowing at about 90 kilometres an hour and seas are
running about five metres,” said Capt. Marco Plasse of the Rescue
Co-Ordination Centre in Halifax.A container ship and Canadian Coast Guard ship Cygnus are waiting for
mid-day before attempting a rescue. Earlier, a Hercules aircraft responded
to Mee’s signal by dropping a life raft. Mee is in contact with the Coast
Guard.”The Cygnus will likely put a fast rescue craft in the water to see if they
can get close,” said Plasse.
