Light to Moderate Trade Winds
We seem to have finally broken out of the super light wind regime that’s been so dominant no Maui this winter. The past week or so we’ve had trade winds to some degree – sometimes too light to really sail but others very sailable.
Started out the week on Monday on 5.3 and a very floaty board. Waves were about the smallest I’ve seen on the north shore in several months with waist high breakers at Uppers. So, not very exciting in the wave department but a good day for freeriding.
Tuesday saw much better winds. Perfectly powered 5.0 for me. Still tiny waves, but so nice to be really powered up on what I consider my bread and butter Maui sail.
Wind lighted up enough on Wednesday that I didn’t bother but came back again on Thursday along with another large west-northwest swell. 5.3 was a bit marginal, but some of the waves were super clean and glassy. Uppers sets were anywhere from head high to mast high + a bit inconsistent due to the direction. Lots of Hookipa regulars showed up at Kanaha again. Heard Hookipa was too light and closed out.
Winds got a bit lighter and more onshore the last two days, but I’m sure there’s been enough for some people to get out. Jazz reported having a very fun Hookipa session on Friday in fairly light winds, only a couple other guys out, a bit bumpy, but some occasional really nice waves.
Looks like today will be similar to yesterday – probably borderline at Kanaha – maybe a bit more wind at Kihei. Looks like we may see a bit stronger winds tomorrow and then again mid-week after the next shear line passes.
