Maui Windsurfing: Video from Hookipa on Thursday
Here’s a quick video I slapped together of action at Hookipa on Thursday. Can’t ID all the riders in it, but definitely Kevin Pritchard, Mark Angulo and Junko Nagoshi.

Waves got a bit bigger the following day and most Hookipa regulars were downwind at Kanaha. Since it looked a little lighter than Thursday and I was underpowered on my 5.3 then, I went with 5.7 and a floaty 95 liter wave board. Glad I did. Seemed fairly windy, but I needed every bit of that to get up to Uppers. Some, fun, big clean rides up there at times.
Yesterday brought lighter winds and tsunami frenzy. Woke up before dawn to tsunami sirens going off. Glad we live upcountry so we didn’t have to evacuate anywhere. Spent most of the morning watching live coverage on the news. The video camera at Hilo Bay on the big island showed some pretty drastic sucking out and surging of water. Sound like Kahului harbor – just down wind from Kanaha here on Maui, had the biggest surge anywhere on the islands at just over 3 feet.
The tsunami warning was cancelled yesterday afternoon. This morning a dying cold front is pushing down the island chain. Looks rainy down on the northshore. Winds are northerly and should clock around to more northeasterly and get stronger. During yesterday’s tsunami warning the County shut down some sewage treatment plant pumping stations to protect them from any surges. As a result, there were some spills apparently and it sounds like they were advising people to stay out of the water between Kuau and Waiehu *- that would include Sprecks and Kanaha. Not sure if that still holds today or not.
Another very large swell is due to start hitting the islands today – probably tonight on Maui. Should be extra large surf tomorrow and strong winds. Both surf and winds should slowly decline through the upcoming week.
