My last wave
Maui North has been very windy the last couple of weeks. This equals a lot of windsurfing. Still relatively fresh on the island and with an injured foot I have tried to take it easy. Still, I have been sailing everyday until yesterday when I took one day off. Three days ago the swell was big and pretty nasty, day after a lot smaller and day before yesterday almost gone. I sailed Kuau all these three days, despite the diminishing waves. Usually Kuau is not my favorite spot in super small conditions. But, I have been enjoying the sailing there so much. I have used my new 4.5 sail Firelight from Hotsailsmaui all the time and tried some different custom and prototype boards from Quatro Hawaii. I have experimented with different footstrap sizes and protections for my foot and just cruised around in the waves. Feeling in my equipment and body.
Relaxed, no-ambition sailing can be so much fun. I’m super stoked for being able to sail at all, I’m super stoked for my new sail that I love more than any sail I have ever used before. And, I think I fell in love with a board the other day. It is a 80 liter prototype Quatro Levi Siver model. Fast, and snappy. Only problem is that I already have a deep serious relationship with another Quatro… I don’t think i can cope to have two?
My very last wave, sailing my last day before the yesterday lay day was not really anything to talk about. Just a little something, barely braking just downwind from Mama’s. It did a small turn on it on my way in to the channel. The wind was dropping fast but with some gusts still making it possible to sail in. It was getting dark with the sun already down under the small cloud always hovering above Ioa mountain. I was the last vindsurfer out, almost nobody left on the beach. A local fisher stood with his pole at Mama’s point, and I feel so totally there in the very moment. On Maui again, on my favorite spot, alone, making a small turn on the way in after three days of sailing.
But as destiny sometimes dictate (or if it is the consequence of peoples’ free will), there was one more thing going on in that very moment: David was walking down the beach, thinking that that windsurfer is probably Jesper. He also had his camera and shoot some pictures on that very last wave. David and I know each other both from Sweden and previous stays here on Maui, but we had not seen each other yet this trip. Now we did. As said, not much of a wave or turn, but I still think it it a little magic going on when a friend just shows up and takes a picture on yourself being in that very moment. Also despite the light and everything, the picture turned out really nice. Thanks for the picture David!
