The first day of the Worlds was blessed with North East winds from 11 to 14 knots after a few days of ”shaky” conditions with rain showers and light fluky air. Unfortunately, the race committee decided to use the first days races in the men fleets as a ”seeding measurement”, which means they will not officially count in the overall standings, but work as a guideline to insure correct seeding for the next days racing.. The decision came as a surprise to most sailors. Why ”waste” a nice day..? A protest has been filed from the Polish team leader, Mr. Piotr Jankoviak, stating that the changes in the sailing instructions were made too late, and consequently should not be valid. The jury decision will be posted as soon as it is official.
However, the first day gave us a good indication of what to expect; Phil Mc Gain, Wojtek Brzozowsky and Dorota Staszewska were setting the pace, winning their respective fleets with comfortable margins. Both Phil and Wojtek started well and went for the middle of the course on the first upwind leg. Wojtek Brzozowski; (Group B) ”Why take chances when you can secure yourself in the middle. I tacked on three small shifts, and gained the few meters I needed to slip around the first upwind mark in front. From then on it was a parade. My speed is excellent, but I had to keep a very close eye on Eduardo Bellini and Bjorn Rune Jensen. Luckily they both went the same way on the second beat, and I could cover.” As expected, Phil Mc Gain took charge of the pack early (group A) and never looked back. Superior speed and excellent tactical sailing was the winning combination. We are looking at a Starboard/Gaastra/ package that seems to be lethal, especially when monitored by an experienced, professional sailor like Phil Mc Gain. Jamie Lewer and Kevin Pritchard were fighting their own war for the second and third. Some of the stars did not shine today, but Dorota Staszewska certainly did.
Two minutes and fourteen seconds is a long distance measured in 14 knots on a Formula board. It must have been pretty lonely. What an impressive performance from the young defending female champion from Poland. The atmosphere is electric.. The weather reports are optimistic, and we look forward to a new day of high quality racing.

Formula VM, Thailand – 1.dag
03-12-2000
Hygge,
Lars DEN-6

Gaastra and The team sails to a successful first day.
Over 160 competitors turned out of the first annual Formula Class World
Championships in Pattaya Thailand. PWA pro’s, IFCA world champions, European
Champions from all classes, and Olympic medallists all come to race on
Production boards and 3 sails in a new class, now called ”Formula”.With the hope of formula being chosen as the new windsurfing class for the
Olympics there was a lot of hype on the new event. Kevin Pritchard fresh from
winning the PWA race and Overall title this year came along with teammate
Phil McGain to see what the hype was all about.” This sort of race gives us chance to see what the rest of the world is
doing with there equipment as well as test the bigger sizes of Nitro 2 in a
famous light wind venue. We have no idea how we will do when everybody is on
production gear, we are looking forward tothe week” says Phil McGain.Phil has been here for several days tuning the sails, getting tuned in the
light wind and generally feeling out the racecourse. The fleet of open men
was split into two groups A and B fleet. The first race today was a
qualifier to seed the competitors. In group A, McGain and Pritchard left no doubt they will be in contention for
the top places. Both McGain and Pritchard using a 10.9 had very clean starts
and were dominating at the first mark in first and second respectively. 3 rd
place was another Gaastra sail with Jamie Lever from England at the helm.
By the time they had rounded the bottom mark and back up to the top McGain
was leading by a healthy margin and was in complete command, Pritchard
managed to pick up plastic bags on his fin on the upwind and was passed by
Lever. Mcgain finished in first, Lever second, Pritchard 3rd.A no pressure race as this one was a qualifier for seeding, Pritchard and
McGain go into tomorrow’s race with confidence. Two races are planned for tomorrow, stay tuned.
