Wave sailing knee-high waves
I usually think of my own wave-sailing ability as somewhat big wave oriented. My favorite wave-sailing are those big, light-wind, north-shore Maui winter days. But not seldom I end up sailing Hookipa beach park the very smallest of days (see the video clip in the note ”As small as it gets”), and back home in Sweden, wave size is more often micro than massive.
Thing is, I usually do have crazy fun also in these less than impressive wave sizes!
Here are some more pictures from one of these crazy fun micro-wave (!) sessions at my local spot Torö last week (September 5, 2012):
When Torö is really small, it is not always smart to search for set-waves. Especially when windy and small, the tiny swell is usually pushed down by the wind. My strategy then is to just sail in and out and try to turn on whatever section that shows up. No ambition full on fun is the ticket! When the waves are not even knee-high and quite weak, you have to compensate with whatever power you might find within your self!
If you don’t have that much to play with, play with what you have! I just love the face on the below photo, not on the wave, on me!
When I say micro sized wave, I do not necessary mean knee-high, sometimes they are more of ankle-hight. Not even sure they qualify as waves, but they are at least something. And that something still makes me high!
But then when you least expect it something we know of as a wave actually comes through. Where did it come from? Why did it come to me? And why wasn’t I prepared?
When I see a picture of an empty decent wave, I cannot help mind-surfing it. But here, I’m there on the picture, next to the wave – why don’t I turn really hard on it, why does it take me by surprise? I should have been on my way up towards that lip. I think I was, but a notch to late. Instead of producing a hard smack on the lip, I think I more or less collided with the foam, not getting through or above, but just straight into it. Next time!!
OK, the forecast looks good. If they materialize, there will be plenty of wind and waves over knee-high in just a few days. Then I will continue to play, not too serious, just playful, not too ambitious, just going for it. Major thanks to Andre and Filip for taking these photos.
