YES SPRING CUP, LAKE GARDA 24 25 MARCH
YES SPRING CUP, LAKE GARDA 24 25 MARCH
The first edition of the YES Spring Cup was blessed by perfect wind conditions and by the partecipation of very high profile competitors, coming from 10 european nations. Top profile racers included (alphabetically) Patrice Belbeoc’h from France, Andrea Cucchi from Italy, Arnon Dagan from Israel, Aleksander Grynis from Poland, James Lever from UK, Janne Rahuansuu from Finland and Brian Rogild from Denmark. Unfortunately ”the World Champion” himself, Wojtek Brzozowski, was not at the starting line, although here, due some very urgent photoshooting with Dorota Staszewska, for their sponsors.
Another ”casualty” was Jamie Lever who, due two broken booms and mainly a bad inflammation at his forearm, was not able to finish a race.
Saturday we had good wind conditions, averaging 16 to 20 knots at the starting line, with stronger gusts along the course, which was a straight upwind/downwind. Although the course was pretty long, the average racing time of the first finisher was always around 20/25 minutes. Four races were run one after the other, with three different winners, showing the high level of the competitors. Two bullets went to Cucchi (Starboard 175/ Pryde 9,8/ Deboichet 70), and one each to Rogild (Starboard 175/Gaastra 9,3/ Deboichet 66) and Marco Begalli Starboard 175/ YES 10,0/ Deboichet 68). Other racers showing good speed where Arnon Dagan (Starboard 175/ YES 10,0/ deboichet 68), who was leading by miles in the first race, but went to the wrong mark, Patrice Belbeoc’h (Exocet 99/ Pryde 9,0/ Select 70) with two seconds. The fourt and last race of the day was particulary hard, due an increase in the wind strenght, now gusting to 25 knots, and because all the competitors were pretty much exausted.
Sunday we had lighter and gustier wind, between 10 and 15 knots, making the races more technical. The race cometee gave three starts to get two discards, but unfortunately at the last top mark of the last race the wind died while we had an interesting battle for the first position between Rogild, Dagan and Cucchi.
The two valid races of Sunday were won by Rogild, this time on a 9,8 Gaastra with a big margin over Cucchi and Grynis. The last valid race was won by Belbeoc’h (using an 11,0 Pryde) fighting with Rahuansuu and Dagan (both on 10,0 YES). Interesting to note that both Cucchi and Rogild had chosen their 11,0 and 10,9 sails for this race and got problems by the increased wind. Right sail choice will be a tricky thing this season.
The next appointment on Lake Garda is on the 5 and 6 of May with the Garda Trentino Cup “Trofeo Neirotti”, hosted by the same club. Unfortunately the next two YES Spring Cups were cancelled because of the total restructuration of the Circolo Surf Torbole, please take note of this.
