    Interview with Wojtek Brzozowski

    Wojtek could you please tell us a few words about the Euro-Cup in Holland. Honestly I am mostly interested why have you withdrawn yourself after four races.

    Well, it has started with a pleasant racing. I had a pretty good start and I was leading with a great superiority over the others. Unfortunately, as I was over the first encirclement making a turn for the wind my sail torned up at the top and went down the mast. I had to finish the race on the motorboat… I thought, well it happens there is nothing to worry about. Thanks to prompt help of Neil-Pryde who fixed my sail I managed to start in the second race already and I won it with a great excite of myself. I did really enjoy it. There was no wind at all during the next day so that the other races we had just on the other day. I was out of luck again. I made a fault start, a tiny one but still a fault start. It’s a pity as the race was an exciting one. We had a great superiority together with Antony and what is interesting we were exchanging the leading positions. Once he was the first the other time I took over him and so on. Finally I reached the finish as second but unfortunately could not count it as a position because of my fault start that time. Then I thought, „it is not funny any more”. After three races two were to be rejected – DNF and OCS. If there were any races more this would be my end. But there was another one. Well…I was 11th that time. I was simply late on the start – about two minutes! I was fixing the equipment on the beach and simply did not reach the start line at time. But still, what a position after two minutes. At least this was a very pleasant race for me. I could say the best from all played here. The truth was that having three out of four races to cross out I had no chance for a good outcome in general. This made me decide about my coming back home.

    Many people were embarrassed with that decision…

    I know about that and understand people being embarrassed about my withdrawal. But there was no sense for my being there any more. It was obvious that having so many races crossed out I could not even dream about winning the Cup no matter how I would do in the other races. The truth is, I did not really feel the sense of my being there in general. After three eliminations that I had won I had the first position guaranteed in the Euro-Cup ranking. I admit that only a winning position in this particular Cup had a value for me. As I lost the chance for fulfilling my will I decided not to compete till the end as my plan was different and I could no more do it my way. This is why I resigned. I did not come back because I could not stand my lost position, this is not true! It has no meaning for me. Moreover, getting the 11th position in the last race gave me the most satisfaction. I started far, far after the others but managed to finish as 11th. I was nearly proud of myself that I did so well. Personally I do not feel that I was afraid of further defects. I tried to be optimistic all the time but I lost this optimism when I knew that there is no chance for making up the losses. Moreover, each day more meant for me additional cost but gave no hopes. This was a good decision especially as we considered that there was no need for me to compete more. These races were not important for me. I wanted to check out my equipment that I made some corrections on. I wonted to try it out before the World Championships. My decision had no influence for my general Euro-Cup result. I wonted to have fun but there was nothing funny for me there. No chances for fulfilling my plan meant for me „time to go home”. On the other hand, I know that I was not the only one. There were others who resigned. Surely there was Jesper as he had two fault starts.

    I have heard some complaints on the event organization

    I personally was not complaining. I liked the event. Nevertheless, we were accommodated in bad conditions. Moreover, the coast was not nice. Concrete paths, a pretty industrial environment. You could hardly meet someone else than the competitors, only few people. We were almost alone and the only thing you could find there were our cars. But do not exaggerate. The atmosphere was worm, nice and sympathetic. On the other hand it’s a pity that there was only the committee and some motorboats organized for us.

    There were also claims that the courses were too long

    That is true. Nobody informed the Committee that the formula races look differently. They organized it as for the Mistral races or something and were convinced that this is the way as it should look like. Fact is that the courses were extremely long. Jamie counted the time of first race. He was surfing exactly 42 minutes and there were others who made it in over an hour. Not only the courses were long but also far away from the coast. We could not see the start line. And after 23 way upwind I still could not see the up buoy.

    Many people asked me why do you use the Formula 175 instead of your 186

    I did not start on my 186 as I am still not so much „fixed” to it. I feel that we are not an alliance with each other jet. There are competitors who are already starting on 186 but I still have to work on it before starting. I trust more my old 175, we have went over so many races together …a great history. But I am getting familiar with 186 pretty fast and I hope we will be a perfect „couple” before World Championships.

    Is it true that Antoine started on Neil Pryde 12,5.Is there already such a sail?

    Yes there is. And this is not all! It is a revelation! Only Antoine was the one who was surfing so fast and so hard. I had to have my eye on him all the time. What was interesting is that I had my 12,2 over which I spend so much time to fix it correctly. And he got a prototype from such a short serial production did nearly nothing to fix it and was simply flying like a plane. I am so much impressed with this sail. I can’t stand awaiting the moment when I will use them.

    Thank you for the interview. To end up I must say the last thing. People awaited the moment when you finally loose. Well, the moment had come, and it passed you. You are already over it!
