THE 2000 PWA ALOHA CLASSIC
WORLD TOUR FINAL
7-15TH NOVEMBER
-Goya sets the pace-
8th November – day 1
Today Francisco Goya A211 (Fanatic, Arrows) made his intention to stay at the top of the PWA Wave Rankings. He put on a display which helped to assure the crowds of the quality of action that everyone expects here at Ho’okipa. In his opening heat Cisco was sailing against Mark Angulo US-18 a sailor who inspired Francisco to turn professional.
Cisco: ” I remember being so impressed watching Mark sail and the life he had. I knew then that I wanted that myself.”
Cisco went through with style, performing a sweeping 360 on the face of the wave. This top scoring move gave Cisco top marks from the judges and put him in the next round with Robby Seeger G-307 (RRD, Simmer). Robby and Cisco drummed up another top performance in the next round. Francisco continued to shred his way along the waves whilst Robby blasted off the top of the wave, landed on the face and completed a 360 taking him into the white water from which he surfaced to sail on. A huge scream of applause came from the crowd on the beach and it highlighted how much Robby has been missed during his absence from the PWA World Tour this year.
Cisco: ”In the first heat every wave came to me. In the second heat none came to me! I knew I had got through the first one and the second was tougher, but I still have a chance and I’m happy to have got through.”
Meanwhile Nik Baker K-66 (Mistral, North) was not having such a good day. Current number two and winner of last years Aloha Classic was knocked out in his first heat. Nik lost out to Kevin Ponichtera US-006 (F2, Arrows) and wildcard entrant Jeff Zamora (US-Z). Nik did not have a good heat. As he left the water it was clear from his body language that he was less than happy with his performance. In a re-run of the Aloha two years ago Nik now has to come back in the next elimination round for a chance to win the event.
Kevin: ”I had a great heat and managed to pull off some good moves. I love being here and sailing at home. I feel confident and have to stay focused to get through the next round.”
As the afternoon progressed the conditions remained good with strong northerly sets coming into the bay. As Robby Naish US-1111 (Mistral, Naish) said: ”Today could be one of the best days of the year here at Ho’okipa.”
In heat seventeen Jason Polakow KA-1111 (JP Australia, Neil Pryde) and Kevin Pritchard US-3 (Bic, Gaastra) knocked out Ricky Vandertoorn KA-99 (Mistral, North) and Dave Kalama (US-2 12). Wave selection proved critical in a tough heat.
Jason: ”I had some nice sized waves but they closed out a bit I saw Kevin get a whole shoulder out of one wave. It was my fault for not selecting the right waves. I knew Kevin was going through and was just trying to find a wave like Kev’s that pealed through from start to finish. I’m happy, I got through and I just hope tomorrow I can stay focused.”
The sailors have treated everyone to a fantastic opening day in the Chilli Aloha Classic. The standard of sailing has been superb and the conditions have made it even more spectacular. The bins at Ho’okipa Beach will be full of broken masts today, a small sacrifice to pay for today’s action. Amongst the moves that have had crowds and sailors up on their feet was a ‘Goyta’ from Jason Stone USA7 (Neil Pryde). Pulling that out in his first round of the contest took him through.
The competitors were judged on their best three waves today and smooth riding was key. In that category Keith Teboul US-60 (Simmer) showed flair.
Of the trialists that are still in the contest Pascal Hardy (KC-99) is a sailor who has had a top day. After dispatching Peter Volwater H-24 (F2, Arrows) and Erik Troostheide H-90 (Mistral, North) he dispatched Livi Siver USA-0 (F2, North) and Andy Wolf G-9 (F2, Neil Pryde). He now faces one of the hardest heats possible with Naish, Teboul and Josh Angulo US-11 (RRD).Today competition continued right through until dusk. A full day and a fierce pace has been set for the rest of the contest. Tomorrow the wave competition is expected to continue and the women’s contest is due to begin.
There is no end to the action and no let up in the Chilli Aloha Classic. This is already turning out to be a contest full of dramatic action and surprises. We wait to see what tomorrow holds in store.
