As announced earlier today by the organizers of World Speed Challenge 2004, the planned world record attempt on the Languedoc-Roussillon coast in the south of France will have to be postponed.Speaking for the organization, Peter Bogner explained, ”The agreement that would have given us the run of our selected lagoon for the necessary time envelope of 28 days had to be withdrawn on short notice. Following thorough consideration of all the relevant issues, we have decided that – at this point – switching to an alternate location would not be in the interest of the project.”
The attempt to break the existing record of 46.52 knots leaves no room for compromise – neither in terms of date nor of location. Bogner stresses that ”we’ve absolutely got to be in the right place at the right time if we want to break this record,” adding that ”it’s entirely possible to try again, at a later point in time, right here on the Languedoc-Roussillon coast.”

The attempt to break the World Speed Sailing Record, planned for April on the Languedoc-Roussillon coast, has had to be postponed. What does Björn Dunkerbeck have to say about it? An interview with the star…The world record attempt in France has now been postponed for the second time – in the autumn of 2003 it was because of the weather, and now it’s for organizational reasons. Are you a bit ticked off now?
No. At moments like this, it’s important that you don’t get discouraged. It’s unfortunate that we couldn’t start in France … but we know that everything has to be 100% right if we want to set a new world record. I’m convinced we’ll have our chance.
Are there already plans for the next attempt?
We don’t have any concrete information at the moment. Talks are scheduled to begin after Easter.
Which location are you favoring?
The conditions have to be just right: strong wind coming from the right direction, and calm waters. There aren’t too many places in the world that can offer you those conditions. You have to be in the right place at the right time of the year. Maybe we’ll be able to give the Languedoc-Roussillon coast another try.
