Bara att konstatera att Mistral är på väg ut och Formula är på gång in, alla stora tillverkare och förbund jobbar för detta utom Mistral förstås.

Sporten och teknikutvecklingen går för fort för den olympiska komiten som bara har möte var 4:e år efter en Olympiad, och bestämmer vilka klasser, sporter som ska vara med nästa spel om fyra år.

Om man ser på i hur många länder vindsurfing utövas och jämför med brottning så kommer i framtiden extremsporterna att ta över fler grenar. Men som sagt var kvarnarna mal långsamt.

”The International Formula Windsurfing Class proposes that ISAF select Formula Windsurfing equipment as the material for the 2004 Games, and that the decision on equipment is made as soon as possible.”

1 Olympic windsurfing should reflect the competition formats on all levels and around the world.

2 Olympic windsurfing should be modern and attractive for both the participants and the media.

3 The format and equipment should be usable for competition all around the world.

4 The equipment should be actively raced by women

5 The equipment should be production equipment and commercially available around the world and if possible from more than one manufacturer.

6 The format and equipment should be capable of being used in a wind range from 6 > 35 knots.

7 The equipment shall be of high quality, durable and affordable.

8 Olympic windsurfing should be capable of being competed in by people in as wide a physique range as possible.

9 The format and equipment should reduce the need to pump, whilst at the same time being at least as physically demanding as it is now.

10 Equal opportunity for all nations to compete at the highest level.

11 Competitors in Olympic windsurfing on all levels should not be exposed to excessive health risks.

12 The restrictions on the equipment: 1 board, 3 sails and other equipment restrictions to limit costs.

13 Attract the best and best known

14 Part of the programme should lead the sport and another part should reflect the sport.

1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Windsurfing equipment evolves very quickly : each year sees improvements in board and sail design.

The Mistral One Design has now been in use since 1993 : sailing on a Mistral One Design has been compared with skiing on wooden skis – it is not representative of the sport.

As a result, it is neither relevant nor exciting.

Formula Windsurfing is based on modern equipment, which is fully capable of planing in less than 7 knots of wind.

Formula Windsurfing reflects the contemporary sport : it is based on the equipment that people actually use: more than 57,000 boards were sold over the last two years, less than 2,000 of these were the Mistral One Design : these were provided primarily to National Federations for their Olympic use, they were not recreational sales.

The adoption of Formula Windsurfing will mean that Olympic windsurfing finally reflects grassroots activity, showcases the best known names of the sport, offers TV-friendly imagery, and consequently provides positive promotion for the sport.

Formula Windsurfing is uniting the sport, with 95% of stakeholders – competitors, industry, media and magazines, totally supportive of the Class. The new International Windsurfers Association fully backs Formula Windsurfing.

Formula Windsurfing allows development, and means that windsurfing will never again be locked into the past : a free market ensures the best equipment at the lowest prices.

The adoption of Formula Windsurfing will mean that the internationally massive Government and National Olympic Committee investment in windsurfing will be directed at the development of the grassroots, not at a niche competition class.

Most importantly, by adopting Formula Windsurfing as the Olympic Class, windsurfing will finally be united with ISAF : by integrating the grassroots of the sport into the day to day business of the MNAs, ISAF will finally represent the sport in essence, as well as statute.

This bid will demonstrate an inclusive class, built on experience and passion and explain why Formula Windsurfing is the ONLY rational choice of Olympic Equipment for 2004.

Formula Windsurfing presents the world of windsurfing combined with a common goal and unity of purpose never before witnessed in the sport, bringing together the world-wide windsurf industry, windsurfing press and competitors with one statement – it’s ”Time for a New Formula”

I helgen hade Sandvikens Windsurfingklubb nostalgimöte dvs de som var med och tävlade på 80-talet hade segeltävling. Solsken, sydvästvind mellan 3-6 m/s. Själv var jag där och tittade på och seglade icke-planing med min 290-bräda. Till 3:e racet lånade jag ihop en F2 Lightning 3,8 m vikt 15 kg, infällbart centerbord och använde ett 8.0 no-cam NP Supersonic.
Vinden hade då minskat till 2-3 m/s. Jag hade inte en sportslig att ta höjd lika fort som de gamla Järvinenbrädorna med 5,5 m2 buksegel och liknande och hade således inte en chans att placera mig.
Hursom, det var 12 ”veteraner” med och seglade, de hade en bra tävlingsdag. Många tyckte att det blåste lite mycket när det ibland i byarna kom upp i 6 m/s (vilket var i det andra racet, jag planade i dessa byar).
Varför detta långa inlägg? Jo, ingen av dessa seglare syns någonsin på vattnet nuförtiden, man har tröttnat och prioriterat annat. Jag är själv i samma ålder, seglade första gången -78 på pråmar och tröttnade efter några år. Men – sista 10 åren har jag seglat centerbordslöst och tänker inte lägga av med det förrän träkistan väntar. Pråmsegling är kul om man kör race men då är det nog tveklöst så att katamaran eller tvåmansjolle är mer utmaning. Vindsurfing nu är en helt annan sport och mycket mycket roligare även om det finns färre utövare.
Folk i allmänhet fattar inte skillnaden så jag tror ändå att det är bra PR för sporten att Fredrik Palm får vara med på ett frimärke. Förhoppningsvis får Niclas Olausson vara med nästa gång man släpper OS-märken men för gemene man spelar det nog ingen större roll.
